I went to Best Buy and Circuit City and looked at several digital recorders from Olympus and Sony. They ranged from $34 to $199 - they each only have one choice in the $50 range and I am skeptical that either can produce the same quality as the ones that are more expensive. I may have not mentioned to the GF tech that once a month I would be recording programs that take place in a roomful of people. I will need something that enables me to screen out background noise.
The digital recorder I liked most was a Sony ICD SXS7 for $149.99 - the same price as the one I bought three years ago. As I review my notes, I see it can record in stereo just like the one from 3 years ago but that this newer one has a triple mike. That seems like that would be a good thing for material that will be recorded and archived.
Next step: Before I finalize what I will recommend, I want to look into what I will need for studio editing.
